First discovered by the archaelogist Charles Fellows in 1838, Xanthos was the capital of ancient Lycia until it was plundered by the Persians in 545 B.C. The mixture of Lycian, Roman and Byzantine ruins create a very special atmosphere at this site. Today, one can see the Tomb of the Harpies, the Neried Monument, the stadium, agora , the Inscribed Pillar as well as numerous tombs on the necropolis.
Letoon, the holy centre of the Lycian Federation lies just 5km from Xanthos. The three temples, dating from 4 B.C. are dedicated to Leto and her twin children Artemis and Apollo. The oracle of Apollo was said to reside 6 months in Letoon and 6 months at Delphi.
