With the pigeon hole tombs behind the city and the heart shaped Aphrodite Temple, Pinara is believed to have been the beauty centre of Lycia.
On seeing the numerous pigeon hole tombs cut in the vast east facing cliff of the acropolis, it is easy to understand why Pilinius knicknamed the Pinarians ‘bird-men’, for if they could not fly how else could they have cut the tombs?
A visit to Pinara can be taken in isolation or combined with a visit to either Letoon or Xanthos.
