Myra & the Church of St Nicholas

A popular destination with visitors is Demre (Kale) where the famous rock tombs of Myra are to be found. Myra was an important city in the Lycian Federation and it is documented that St. Paul visited the city in 60 B.C. on his way to Rome. Much of the ancient city remains buried under the modern town but the theatre and rock tombs have been excavated.

Kekova & the Sunken City

Kekova is an area of incredible beauty where history mingles with nature. The turquoise waters sheltered by Kekova Island, Simena village topped with the remains of a Byzantine fort, sarcophagi protruding from shallow waters and littered on the hillside and of course the Sunken City itself.

The magical landscape has been well documented throughout history. During the reign of the Roman Emperor Augustus, Straban, a writer of antiquity, described the borders of the Cappadocian region in his 17 volume book Geographika ( Geography-Anatolia X11,X111,X1V) At that time, the area known as Cappadocia extended from the Black Sea coast in the north down to the Taurus Mountains in the south, to Aksaray in the west and Malatya in the east.
